[intʃhʌn], früher Chemulp'o [tʃ-], Hafenstadt in Süd-Korea, am Gelben Meer, im Rang einer Provinz 958 km2, 2,47 Mio. Einwohner; katholischer Bischofssitz; Technische Hochschule. Zweitgrößter Hafen (u. a. wichtiger Fischereihafen) Süd-Koreas; Aluminium-, Eisen- und Stahlgewinnung, Schiff-, Maschinen- und Fahrzeugbau, außerdem Glas-, Keramik-, Textil- sowie Nahrungsmittelindustrie, Erdölraffinerie.
 
 
Das wegen seiner strategischen Lage »Tor zur Hauptstadt« genannte I. war der wichtigste koreanische Hafen, der aufgrund des Vertrages von Chemulp'o (26. 2. 1876 am 1. 1. 1883 dem Außenhandel geöffnet wurde. Es blieb der einzige Hafen, in dem eine Ausländerniederlassung (General foreign settlement) entstand (1884). Während des Koreakrieges (1950/53) wurde I. bekannt durch die Landung der UNO-Truppen unter General D. MacArthur im September 1950.
